Poison Mechanics Questions

20

Started a Ranger and just want to try Path Finder and poison skills. So far it's going well, but some of the mechanics are not very obvious to me and wasn't able to find straight forward answers.

  1. Will over 100% chance to poison give a chance do a second poison stack? I know it did not work like this in POE1, but wasn't clear to me here. I've seen my Poisonburst Arrow add two stacks, but wasn't sure if that was specific to the skill.

  2. Do my poisons stack for the pods/vines bonuses? Curious if they synergize with stacking poisons on them or if I should be trying to do one big poison.

  3. Why do Poison skills say "Does not hit, but poisons enemies as though hitting them"? I'm not really sure what the mechanical implication of this is.

Im at t8 maps on my pathfinder so far. Its very strong but honestly pretty boring as you mostly just gas arrow and poison nova, with rain of arrows to apply withering on bosses.

  1. No. Poisonburst might be able to apply two if the arrow and explosion count as two hits, but im not 100% sure on that as i havent used it since i got gas arrow.

  2. Fewer bigger hits is better. Poisons only stack to your limit, which caps at 10 with the passives, support gem, and unique gloves adding to 5 and using the ascendancy to double that. The current meta is primarily around gas arrow and poison nova, as you dont need to worry about poison chance and can scale magnitude and damage higher. Toxic growth is also good but it felt clunky to use for me.

  3. Poison scales off 20% of your physical/chaos hit damage, so those guarantee applying poison (dont need poison chance), but dont count as hitting for other onhit effects.

Poisonburst can definitely apply two poisons, depending on your poison chance.
