Vaal Orbs, Omen of Corruption, and Uniques
Could not find a community effort to study the effects of the vaal so here it goes.
I haven't done a big vaal project but after some yoloslams and observing the Trade, this is what I have noticed so far. Please feel free to correct anything wrong.
Vaal Orb Results
In PoE2, Using a Vaal Orb on a unique can do the following things.
- Nothing
- Add one extra socket (exception: caster weapons, rings, belts, amulets cannot roll sockets)
- Reroll the range of 1-X* modifiers of an affix, changing it from the current range to -0.78 ~ +1.22%**
- Add a Corrupted Mod
The presumed outcome is 25% for each pick.
From what I can tell, with the exception of Glimpse of Chaos, Vaal Orbs cannot turn unique items into rares in PoE2.
(Unrelated to this topic but good to know: Using a Vaal Orb on magic/rare items can reroll existing prefix/suffixes with completely random ones, effectively utterly bricking the item).
Regardless of which outcome the game picks, the item will become Corrupted and cannot be modified any further. Runes and Soul Cores can still be inserted into empty sockets.
Omen of Corruption
Using an Omen of Corruption will make your next Vaal Orb "more unpredictable". In typical PoE fashion this is cryptic as fuck. Many are suggesting that this item is effectively double corrupting from PoE1. However looking at the trade website, there must be some limitations.
- A unique item cannot have both a Corrupted Mod, as well as an extra socket.
- A unique item cannot have both a Corrupted Mod, as well an affix outside of the regular range.
- A unique item cannot have an affix outside of the regular range, as well as an extra socket.
- A unique item cannot have 2 additional sockets, nor can it have 2 Corrupted Modifiers.
So, what does this omen do then?
Confirmation needed
I have used 10 Omens of Corruptions on Mahuxotl's Machination, and never once did I get "Nothing" or "Additional Socket". Exactly 5 times I got affix changes (3 times both stats, 2 times only one stat), and 5 times a Corrupted Mod. It's a small sample size but from this limited testing it looked like the Omen can either
- Roll modifiers (1-X*) or,
- Add a Corrupted Mod
Did you get a socket by using an Omen? If so this would mean that using an Omen simply removes the outcome of "Nothing", turning a vaal slam from 25% to 33.3%.*
Did you get "Nothing" by using an Omen? Then the only logical explanation is that it can simply increase the number of modifiers it rolls.
*Vaal orbs can roll 1 or more affixes in a unique item. Perhaps the chance of rolling multiple modifiers is rarer than rolling only 1, and the Omen increases this.
**PoE might be rounding up or down the decimals, but all edge cases of rolls on trade are currently exactly between the -0.78 ~ +1.22% range, meaning a 22% increase or decrease. Note that an item can have an increase and a decrease of two (or more) separate mods at the same time.
Interesting or Popular Uniques to vaal
Item | Best Outcome | Explanation |
---|---|---|
Mahuxotl's Machination | Additional Socket | On a 600% Increased effect of Socketed Soul Cores roll, having a 3rd socket is far more worthy than having a 806% increase effect with only 2 sockets. |
Morior Invictus | Additional Socket | Getting a 5th socket on a great base will sky rocket the value. |
Ingenuity | +22% increase | A 96% or 97% Ingenuity would be one of the most expensive items in the game. Currently the max on trade site is only 88% for 130 divs |
Midnight Braid | +22% to Damage taken Recouped as Mana | A few meta builds around. Cheap belt with a strong possible ROI. |
Astramentis | +22% to all attributes | An extremely expensive unique to begin with, I can't imagine how much a potentially +150 all attribute one would go for. |
Blueflame Bracers Goldcast Cuffs | -X% of Fire Damage Converted to Cold Damage | Some builds want to convert most of their damage to cold, but not all. I believe the sweet spot is around 90%, but check some guides. |
Queen of the Forest | 1% increased Movement Speed per -XXX evasion | Can go down to 390 evasion, which would give a character with 20k evasion an additional 11% movespeed |
Fireflower | +1 All Skills/Minions | Used in some minion builds. There are none for sale with these mods currently. |
The Everlasting Gaze | +22% Gain Maximum Mana as Extra Maximum Energy Shield | Very meta amulet, reasonably expensive despite not being a very rare drop. |
Ventor's Gamble | Anything goes | A wildcard of a unique. Special mention to +2 spirit, and even more -lightning resist for Doryani builds. |
Ryslatha's Coil | +% more phys, -% less phys | Extremely popular item from PoE1, lacks the oomph currently with how bleed builds scale. Can change overnight with a buff to bleed builds, so keep an eye out. |
Widowhail | +22% bonus | A perfect roll is 305% |
Bonus - New & Powerful Corrupted mods in PoE 2
I didn't know these existed so there is a whole untapped potential out there.
Mod | Slot |
---|---|
+1 all Minion Skills | Helm |
+20-30 Spirit | Helm |
+1 All Skills | Amulet |
+1 Melee Skills | Gloves |
+1 Elemental/Chaos | Caster Weapons |
+1 arrow/bolt | Bow/Xbow |
+1 Rage on Hit | Martial Weapons |
+1~3 max res | Belts |

Goated write up
so how to double corrupt in poe2?
using Paquate's Mechanism only? in Act 3 and 6
In the interesting unique, there is the helm with 20-30% of maximum life as es, can be corrupted up to 37%. Also the other mode of % percent bypass es can roll differently
No idea what most of this means but I know I'll need it sooner or later
Got a socket using this omen and nothing else
Some one earlier today posted the unique gloves that give 3% attack speed per 10 dex that had been corrupted up to 4%, which is a 33% increase. Would be surprised if it rounded up from 22% instead of staying 3, but maybe that's how it's intended.
I would add Cloak of Flame. Sold one with 48% phys taken corrupt for 2div.
just to confirm: in POE2 it is now 100% safe to vaal an item? No weird reroll into random bullshit rare? no "puff, your item is destroyed"? that is amazing!
About the 22% roll range, there's some exceptions or maybe it always rounds "away" from the original as you say.
Death's harp goes from +3 arrows to +4 arrows by corruption, maybe due to rounding, but it's 33% increase in this case. It also can go down to +2 instead.
For mods with no range, it goes up/down 22%.
For mods with range, it probably adds the 22% extra bottom and top ends and then divines the rolls.
Etc 100 static will roll between 78-122.
Etc 80-100 will roll from 62 to 122.
Meaning its possible to be confused as to why your original value of , say 98 (80-100) rerolled into 62, bypassing the 22% range.
Edit: not sure how OoC will interact with this "More unpredictable". Maybe double the range from 22% to 44%.
Obviously you can also use them on the various gems.
The additional socket happens after you have max sockets already in them?
Thanks, I always love this kind of posts!
Tainted oil in the game or not?
Where do the corrupted mods sit? are they prefix/affix or overwrite implicit? or are they extra like an enchantment?
If the mods are lowered by 22% is it possible for a +4 wand to drop to +3?
If something is corrupted, can you still add sockets to it ( artificer orb)?
Does this mean you cannot brick items no more at PoE 2? An i getting it right, sry newbie here.
corrupt also can add additional affix, NOT IMPLICIT to some items. to jewels for example
so you can have 5 rare mods on jewel instead of 4
I can confirm getting a nothing result with omen
I've had a vaal orb change movement speed from 25% -> 20% and change flat ES to flat mana on a pair of boots.
I've noticed Vaaling seems less punishing in POE2 so far. You can't really RIP an item, and the downsides aren't necessarily enough to where you will stop using the item instantly. Most items I have Vaal'ed, didnt like the roll, I sold for the same price on POE trade as if it was un-corrupted. To me, it kinda just seems like neutral to upside only, depending how harshly you rate something like going from 10% move speed to 8% on boots.
What are the outcomes for maps? +1/-1 level, change all prefix to suffix or vice versa, scale effect of modifiers just like on other items, and do nothing?
So for caster weapons does it mean each outcome becomes 33% or does “nothing” eat up the chance of adding sockets making it 50% chance to do nothing and 25% of the other 2?
I used omen of corruption on a 653% Machination and it rolled a 3rd socket on my first try
Ah. So it’s simple then

Does all of this information also apply to Vaal orbing rare items not just uniques?
