How exactly does (passive) block work in PoE2?

Hey there,

my googling gave me nothing and some pre release interviews gave conflicting info on the topic, sooo...

How exactly does (passive) block work in PoE2?

I'm especially interested in these questions:

  • What kind of hits does it block?
  • What about spells?
  • How does the Warbringer's Turtle Charm ascendency work?

Maybe we can compile some info on block together here :)

From my understanding, it blocks the same things that active block does, so attacks and spells. It does not block aoe or the big boss attacks that flash red.

And so turtle charm works like acrobatics for evasion where it does let you block aoe. Unsure about whether it lets you block the red unblockable attacks but I would guess it does.

passive block:

  • blocks frontal single skill hits

active block:

  • blocks any single skill hits

any red attack by bosses cant be blocked unless stated otherwise

A patch allowed block, both passive and active, to be full radius rather than a frontal cone. Spells and Attacks are not differentiated anymore on the playerside defensively, so it's now broken down into AoE, Proj, Strikes, and Slams it seems. You can block all Proj, Strikes by default. Ground effects like Slams and AoE effects need special conditions like the Warbringer or a unique shield. Both cases lead to you having 26% base block.

Base block from shield and possibly unique boots is then effected by increased block chance to get to block value. Most nodes are like 1-4% per point on tree, some are worth 12% w/ negative effects.

The best block situations from my experience is:

  • Warbringer or 1 mid-high rolled prefix for block chance to get to 40% base block w/ 87% increased chance to block for 75%. You can roll up to 53% base block on a shield.
  • Svallin Warbringer w/ full investment needing around 130% block chance for a mid rolled unique to "lucky block" up to 84% real block chance, or 158% to cap 67% block chance w/ lucky to ~89% block chance.
  • Wailing Wall w/ 25% block chance corrupt implicit, needing about 125% to get full block at 75%.

There are also slow boots you could consider with this to add 10% to base block chance, but it'll be reduced by turtle charm too.

The description says strikes and projectiles that hit. It's essentially block and spell block from Poe 1 rolled into one stat.

This includes all melee but not slams. Arrows and spells but not ground AOEs (like flamblast) or ground degens like burning ground.

I am wondering about the 1% block chance = 1% dmg nodes. Does that count for your block chance on shield or for the modifiers of the node. Lets say the node gives +30% block chance, is that 30% increased damage?
