New to POE: What are the best apps and tools to use?

312

Hey everyone, as someone new to Path of Exile, I’m looking for safe and reliable apps, overlays, and loot filters.

Previously, I created a compilation of tips for beginners, and now I’d love to create a similar resource for essential tools. Information has been hard to find in a consolidated manner, so the goal here is to use crowdsourcing to help new players navigate this space better.

There were a ton of helpful tips from the community in my last compilation post, and I will continually edit this original post to keep it updated.

Here’s what I’ve come across so far:

Overlays:

  • Overwolf - This is the first Google match so it'll get lots of downloads, but there is negative sentiment from the community about data being sold.
  • Sidekick - Open source that has price check / map check. Reddit announcement post here.

Companion Apps

  • Exile exchange 2 - Similar features that make trading easier? Reddit post here.

Loot Filters:

  • Greengroove - Loot filters are good for endgame and they hide low-value drops while highlighting the best drops. Reddit post here.

As a new player, it’s pretty overwhelming trying to figure out what’s safe to use. Any recommendations or insights would be greatly appreciated!

originally as everyone else I uses Neversink's
but I come across to several others and kinda suit my style more, I heard only good words for cdr; but right now I'm using Pecham's, dude had a thread somewhere but I only bookmarked his filter.

I played dota so I've heard of Overworlf but never gave it a shot, in POE2 though it's very helpful in helping to do trades, sometimes the app don't respond to trade-in or out though.

edit: Pecham's thread (it's on POE site)

You really don't need these. But the loot filter is handy so you don't miss currency. Neversink's simple filter should be on the list For the rest you can easily buy using the poe2 official trade site and not even sell a thing to other players until deep into maps maybe

loot filters

greengroove???

This must be an ad lmao

Even the first quick search will show neversink

quite ironic you're asking questions like that, tell people you're new to PoE, and at the same time create "compilations of tips"

In early poe1 there were no lifebars for player & enemies so I used an overlay to show those, but this was eventually implemented as a feature in poe1 and 2 so I don't use any overlays anymore

For loot filters, I'd just stick with Neversink.

The only 3rd party app you need (and I use the term need loosely) is a trade/price checker.

There are basically three to choose from right now.

Sidekick seems to be a fan favorite.

Exiled Exchange 2 is essentially a continuation of Awakened PoE Trade which is a very popular tool in the first game.

PoE Overlay 2 is an Overwolf app, which uses that other program as a backbone. You'll see droves of people decrying it for that fact, but I've used it for years and have never had Overwolf bother me with ads or anything.

I think the first two are solid. Sidekick is the most basic, EE is a bit more in-depth. I personally prefer Overlay because it has more features, like a list of pending trades, useful hotkeys, and more to come (especially if it gets up to snuff with its original game version, which has an in-game trade browser.)

Try them all. Choose your favorite. Not other peoples' favorite.

Overlays/Apps (in order of preference):

Sidekick - Automatically searches by +- 20% or any range. Results pane unnecessarily shows full size graphic for each item, makes it hard to scroll, but functions similarly to searching in the website

Exile Exchange 2 - Automatically searches by +- 20% or any range. A lot of affixes it doesn't recognize. Results pane is simple 1 line listing but doesn't allow you to view stats of item(s) it finds, 3/4 of results have ? question marks, prices oftentimes not reliable

Overwolf - requires base app which is intrusive and has in the past caused game performance issues. Nicest/cleanest interface for price checking, but only searches exact stats by default, have to input +- 20% ranges manually every single time

I don't really like any of the current trade apps since they're all worse than just using a good filter on the official trade site atm.

Where they would be helpful is instant ingame pricing of items but the economy right now is hyper-inflated so I doubt it would be accurate anyways
