Mercenary Gemling Vs Witch Hunter
I’m looking to do a crossbow lightning based build. I’m stuck between the two ascendancies at the moment. Stacking intelligence and dexterity with hands of wisdom and action could be good, but witch hunter seems to offer quite a bit too.

There's a reason as to why barely anyone at the top plays Witchhunter. Deadeye or Gemling just offer way more power. I have a Witchhunter character, but I am fully aware that it would do like 30-50% more damage as a Deadeye.
My vote is gemling because the ascendancy is so flexible that you won't feel bad rerolling in the future and you can try multiple builds
If you want to try something off-meta, look into monk/invoker xbows. I built mine around explosive shot/shockburst rounds with painter's servant for damage conversion to lightning. Since then, I've upgraded to HoWA and is tanky/has nice clear:
Currently testing on getting ice/lightning heralds to proc off each other - I can get them to consistently chain when I have unbound avatar up, but not as consistent without it.
