Delirium is the worst in-map mechanic in endgame
Ritual, Expedition, and breach are all good mechanics that have balance issues.
Delirium is just bad because its attempt at "oppressive mood" makes the game worse. It's an experience that someone who isn't already hooked would never choose to play. The fog is by far the worst offender and causes two huge problems:
- It completely destroys all visual clarity. When I activate delirium, I lose sense of how many monsters there are and can't see what they are doing. I can no longer react to an impending volley of scary attacks because I can't see them. Paradoxically, this doesn't make the fog feel dangerous (surely the intended mood effect) - it makes it feel safe because most of the time you're completely fine. Dying in maps already feels shitty, but dying to shit you can't fucking see feels extra fucking shitty...
- It desaturates the game and destroys the visual feast you're normally presented with. I see grey fog. I hear things dying in grey fog. I guess I'm winning? It doesn't feel good anymore to destroy packs of mobs in Delirium. It feels more like drudgery.
Then there's the music override. You have a talented composer who wrote many, many pieces of background music to play throughout the game and Delirium overwrites it all with its own theme. This just compounds the effect of feeling monotonous because even the sound becomes monotonous.
To top this off - emotions can be applied to maps, so unlike every other icon-mechanic, you can put permanent Delirium on every single map and are rewarded for doing so. You're incentivized to play the worst mechanic in the game all the time and are missing out if you don't do it.
Seriously, this needs major changes. Drop the music override entirely and find some auditory alternative. Find an alternative to the fog that isn't terrible - there are surely other options. Delirium should have a "mood" to it, but it needs to be done in a more subtle way so it isn't undermining art and moment-to-moment gameplay so much.

Delirium should be at the very least reworked into just being a ramping delirious state that goes up as you either kill or move from the mirror. Fuck time based shit.

You’re supposed to feel unsettled and delirious when you’re in the fog..
The strongboxes i thought were the weirdest map mechanic (didnt play poe1 to compare) mobs come out so slowly.
Ritual aswell such a cluster if mobs and random blood waves sometimes in a small pathway, weirdly placed sometimes
But yeah delirium also sucks
Dellirium was my favorite mechanics, amazing music, atmosphere. All other mechanics are absolute horse shit, but after patch it's no longer bugged so you can't chill and farm 5 parts per map, now the fog is gone before I reach 4, never had more than 3, it's too fast, and my character is killing fast enough anyway, so it's the design, because there are much slower builds which won't be able to get even 2.
Once I got boss hp bar on the screen, but boss was nowhere to be found, fog obviously gone after few seconds and nothing happened. Wasted potential.
For me the worst mechanic is strongbox, then rituals/expeditions, breach and delirium. Everything is too much focused on clear spead, insane clear speed, who can keep up with this shit anyway? Especially with such annoying map layouts.
I just can't see shit.
For me the only problem is the missing colors. My last 200 maps or so have been very grey.
Personaly, i love delirium mechanic. If you dont like it, dont play it and let me play wath i like.
I'm not someone who plays with the minimap splayed across my screen, I leave it in the corner and open it for reference as needed. Delerium makes the minimap mandatory because I can't see the nooks, rocks and cubby-hole-dead-ends; or anything else on the fucking ground for that matter. Maps become un-navigatable due to so many things in the players way. 4 out of 5 times, if my character gets "stuck" it's because the level is visually telling me that's a walkable space, but in reality it is not, it's a wall.
I'm glad you brought up the music, if I have to listen to the same track virtually every map, at least lemme choose a good one. Delerium's music gets real old real fast.
To me, ritual is the worst and delirium one of the best. I think my build just can't handle the limited space in ritual while Delirium I have the entire map space to run/regroup and rethink if necessary
I can't really do any of the endgame mechanics besides expedition. Ritual, delirium, and breach all body me with hundreds of mobs that just instantly jump on top of me.
Ritual is ass
Typically with delirium and breach I have the habit of going the wrong direction or not being able to see the fog and getting kicked out of the thing. When there’s four things on the map it’s not so bad but if it’s the only thing and I mess it up 30 seconds into the map it feels bad. Kinda making a funny but really tho.
I refuse to juice my maps with distills even though my character can do it. The fog is visually annoying and it adds lag, and the immune charging mobs are just frustrating.
I realized I enjoy the game more completely avoiding it
I love delirium music, fog is horrible though, especially on simulacrum
As a deaf player I can’t say much to the music but I like delirium lol
Maybe cause I’m only doing T14s right now and I’m new so I havnt done a ton of them quite yet but delirium and breach are my favs I really only dislike ritual
wait until u play any class with Overwhelming Presence turned on xD
I like it.
Another addition, it ruins any bit of visual clarity we had for walkable space. Maps that have small gaps or rocks in the path become a matter of having to stare at your minimap 100% of the time because you can't physically see what's navigable ground and what's not.
My idea is that GGG needs some serious hiring in the FX dept
Delirium maps also just drop 2 to 6 splinters and you have to chase the stupid fog.
Takes too long to get 300 compared to breach
If I anoint a map to make it delirious, my shaders and network (or so it shows in the F1 graph) go absolutely bonkers and it's virtually unplayable, freezing -> speeding up and teleporting me if I ever try to move. I've tried changing/lowering all my settings, changing from DX12 to Vulkan to DX11 and back, and changing settings regarding my PC's shader cache + resetting PoE2's shader cache, and it's still never playable.
Yet if I play a map with built-in Delirium (such as from a Precursor Tablet), it works perfectly fine. I'm not sure what the difference between the two is, but it sucks not being able to fully juice out a map because it makes my game unplayable.
Ritual altars can get a buff too . Points you get are often to low. And shit you can get are worthless 99.9 percent of the time. I dont expect divines worth of things everytime i do a altar but more then how it is now.
More people really show throw at least an ire on thier t11+ maps. simulacrum splinters are nearly an exalt each. One ire is worth a few per map typically.
Ever since the recent patch (mid last week) every time I get to 4 stacks the fog completely disappears in hyper speed. I've tried just spamming blink in its direction to keep up but it's literally impossible. It has happened on 15 of the last 15 delirium maps I've run. Prior to the patch I got to 6 and 7 stacks regularly provided I didn't have a linear map the fog didn't go along with. Hope it's fixed soon, hard enough to get splinters as is.
Rituals are the worst by far, and it's not even close. Firstly, if you get a ritual on a map like Augury or Crypt or any map with narrow corridors, it can be impossible to complete due to the restriction in movement and the overwhelming mobs.
If you get a tornado in the mix, you are going to die. The biggest issue is the rewards. They are straight-up dog shit. Most people i know will skip Ritual simply because you get nothing from these events.
Delirium just doesn't make sense. I'll be killing when a timer pops up and the event finishes. Other times, I'm running around with nothing to kill, and there is no count down. This shit is weird and buggy but still has some rewards and doesn't limit my movement as much.
Done like 10 and have no clue what I am supposed to do to make it through the "right" way
I love delirium. I think the grey fog is beautiful.
People play with the music on?
It’s so weird to see this opinion as a longtime POE1 player where we went years with everyone loving delirium and not caring about the music or that deli was optimal on every juiced map.
This is not a big problem at all.
I'll be honest my biggest complaint about del is the emotions. I wish there was just a list in game of "this combo does this". Because currently I'm either just fiddling with them at random to see what it'll give or I feel like I'm playing old school minecraft and have to go to Google and look up the crafting recipe, which I've avoided doing so far. If there is a combination list somewhere in game someone please tell me because I want to love this mechanic so badly. It has its own stash tab!
Simulacrum on the other hand is so much cooler than it was in PoE1 - you move through the act zones and each area is turned into a nightmare in some way (e.g. the act 1 zone has all the NPCs hanging from the tree where the hooded one initially did). Those mirrors also completely reflect your character and the effects, super nice touch
Delirium being so all-encompassing makes sense thematically. But yeah it doesn't feel good to do. I actually like seeing things, and while visual clarity isn't amazing in poe2, I still don't want to intentionally let go of the rest for rewards. (I do play with music off anyway). I've actually quite enjoyed the visual improvements in poe2, as well, which is sad to let go of.
I'm also not a fan of the mechanic that makes invisible, invincible monsters surround you or push you into things. It's just annoying to get pushed around, but I've died a few times to just...being surrounded and not able to move before they all pop into existence. Moooooost of the time I live, so I don't want to esc > leave every time it happens, but I never know for sure if they'll just pop in and deal 8k dmg in a split second after becoming visible.
I like the emotions mechanic with anoints and maps but delirium itself not only crashes my computer basically anytime it’s loaded, but that white mist just sucks. Also the accumulation of splinters needs tuned up a bit compared to the other events.
Ritual and expedition are trash
There needs to be an option to disable the fog and sounds of delirium. I like mobs without corpses since it works pretty well with flicker strike while having heralds and i can jump around pretty easily compare to nromal mapsö However visual clutter and random shit spawning and hitting you while you cant see shit is bad.
Same goes for strongboxes so slow spawn rate, shit ass drop rates and a useless fog where you cant even see where monsters are spawning
The clarity is one thing, and an uncontroversial one at that. The rest of your argument is just pure preference though, and it's a bit silly to present it like it's some objective mistake standing in the way of attracting players on the whole.
Is delirium the green and white rip in spacetime that I see in maps? I just treat it the same as breach I have no idea what it does lol
It's also just kinda boring. You fight the delirium dudes for what feels like 2 fucking hours and at the end of that it drops like 2 distilled ire and maybe one of the slightly more rare ones that still doesn't go toward whatever instill you're currently looking for. Doesn't seem worth the hassle lmao
I cant imagine running delirium on a regular basis for any reason due to like half a dozen reasons.
As long as I get +45% rare monsters and 40 delirium splinters per map I don't care if I can't see 🤷
There were two things I was disappointed to see being ported to PoE2 and those were Delirium and timeless jewels. I'm just thankful cluster jewels didn't come with Deli and hoping they don't come with anything else just because they're already designed and therefore easier to implement.
Couldn't agree with this more.
I despised delirium in PoE for this and it's even worse in PoE2 because you encouraged to put it on every map. And the visual clarity issues are even worse than they are in PoE.
The game looks so good then they go and ruin it with the awful colour grading and fog.
And that it is tied to anoints means that in SSF you can't just ignore it and accept less loot. You have to farm it for emotions and the good ones are extremely rare so you have to do loads of it and I hate it so much.
For me it's the little flute line in the music. Baaaa duuuuuuuh ba-DUH. Sounds like a child playing a recorder. Pulls me out of the game every time lol
