Is passive node "One with the River" underwhelming? I'm confused..

10

I'm playing an acolyte of chayula monk and doing really fine with it. I went for a rather long stretch down to get the "One with the River" node as it looked great; +30% to defenses along with some other neat stuff.

I looked at my defenses before taking it and after taking it, and.. it didn't do much. I'm lvl 52 at this moment.

I don't understand when the +30% defenses is calculated. Can anyone help me with that?

I went from:

  • 1402 evasion rating to 1551 evasion rating
  • 603 energy shield to 658 energy shield
  • No resistances changes

It feels extremely underwhelming for such a large investment in points - I do get that I add some more freeze build up and attack speed, but still.. am I better off NOT going for this passive node and taking something else?

Increased defences is the same as your %increased ES and %increased evasion

If you got 200% increased ES on your tree already you wont notice the 30% increase that much, you are going from 200% to 230%.

Basically it’s an increased amount so it adds 30 of the base value before any modifiers are added, you probably already have quite a bit of increased evasion and ES from the tree that’s why it’s not so noticeable

The issue is more your gear. 1500 evasion rating and 650 es? Of course increases to defenses don’t do much, your BASE defenses from gear are very low.

“Increased” is different than “more”. Increased sums all other applicable values together as a large multiplier, each instance of more acts as its own multiplier.

So, if you had 300% increased evasion, and took this node, you would have 330% increased evasion.

I think it’s only worth pathing to if the nodes along the way are helpful to you (e.g. freeze build up). Most of the increased energy shield and evasion nodes on the monk side of the tree are +12%, so assuming you aren’t heavily invested into armor, the 30% increased defenses is only a little better than 2 normal nodes that are easier to get to.

30% increased defenses = 30% increased ES, 30% increased armour and 30% increased evasion. These are additive with other sources of increased.

Fury_Fury_Fury1

30% increase in defenses is not amazing by itself, but it's a cherry on top on an otherwise okay node. Attack speed is good for any quarterstaff build, and If you utilise freeze or stun in any way, it's great.

Resistance is not a defense
