CPU over-utilisation is still a problem!
Firstly, the issue has been confirmed to exist in official GGG patch notes:
Early Access Patch Notes - 0.1.0f Hotfix 1 - Forum - Path of Exile
- Adjusted thread priorities to reduce CPU over-utilization. This can help prevent crashes under specific circumstances.
But sadly, is still happening.
Secondly, people have tried to report this here and in the GGG forums many times. But are most often met with responses akin to: "Well I'm fine, so this isn't a problem" EDIT, see reply below...!
How many people had their Note 9 catch fire? Less than 0.1% of the total sold. Does that mean there wasn't a problem?
Thirdly, most players do not run monitoring tools to see that they are being thermally throttled.
My system is quite juiced, I have 32GB RAM, Nvidia 4070 ti Super, Intel 14th gen i5, it should not be struggling to play this game.
Running programs specifically designed to stress your CPU, like Prim95 in the most stressful mode, and Cinebench never throttle my CPU Max temp I reach is 82c
Other similar games like Diablo 4 never throttle my CPU, max temps are in the high 70's
But POE 2 will always hit 100c and throttle my CPU within minutes of gameplay.
This will be affecting many players' PC's, most blissfully unaware, and needs to be addressed.
Please help keep this issue alive, it is important to address, running a rig at the very threshold of max temps for a long time is not good for your computer.
More examples:
Early Access Feedback - CPU/GPU are getting fried. Cant play the game. - Forum - Path of Exile
Early Access Feedback - POE2 Overheats my CPU to 100c and PC force shutdown - Forum - Path of Exile

Had same issues since windows update. They will get to it. Long list in EA.
9800x3d owner here, most of the times when trying to enter new map, cpu goes 100% and everything freezes... installed process lasso, launch it by default when windows starts, set affinity (always) off on first 2 cores and game still crashes everything but this time I'm able to skip all the hassle and worries by tabbing to force close POE2 and relaunching it instead of hard resetting everything... also tried everything else, uninstalling 24H2, using dx11 or vulkan, nothing worked but this, not sure who to blame for this lack of optimization but I'm trying to keep things safe at least...
Only hard freeze on loading screens. If you watch the graphs every time you load a zone the CPU usage spikes massively along with the shader. I imagine thats what is spiking temps dramatically, sending the CPU into a safe state
Thirdly, most players do not run monitoring tools to see that they are being thermally throttled.
But people should check their own device for thermal issues and check their driver versions including BIOS before they spam "game bad i crash all the time".
yea i get crashes as i open it again after closing out the game . so i play normal few stutters on map open but 12 hours session clean. if i close the game and choose to open it up again and have not turned my pc off or rebooted it in some way, i will crash as soon as i get into ANY map . but its not only crash it freezes the entire procces of windows and all. Nothing lefton my event viewer too so i gets me frustrated.
Is this why when I play PoE2, I basically cannot use any other program because it slows down everything else on my PC? Other games, like GW2 and Civ6 (two games I play the most otherwise) I can freely go btw discord, my internet browser and any other application. PoE2 I basically cannot use the trading website, wiki, poe2db or anything else because it basically bricks everything.
Does this have anything to do with frequent kickouts to login screen or just straight up full on crashes?
I7-11700KF and a 3070ti, i have yet to experience any freezes or crashed since EA launch.
My Cpu usage goes to 100% sometimes during loading screens, and my cpu package temp goes to 82°c ish, but quickly goes back down to 65-70°c ish. During mapping its typically closer to 70°c
This cant be fixed because it is game design. Happens even poe 1 that has 25 major patches over a decade. There is no way most CPU/GPU can handle so many objects on screen. Every object requires collision detection, physics, rendering, etc. This people design games as if resources were unlimited.
no crashes on my 7950x3D but frame spikes have me killed several times now.. such a poorly optimized game. Poe 1 was way better
I'm not saying there's zero problem with the game. I'm sure there are valid concerns and issues being brought forward here (here comes the but)...
... but if your CPU is running at normal voltages while playing PoE2 and you're still getting thermal throttling, your CPU cooling is insufficient. The 13th and 14th gen intel parts can run very hot and need a lot of cooling.
Unless there's evidence of PoE 2 increasing voltages into power virus status (you don't mention voltage once, nor do any of your example links), then regardless of what's happening in PoE2's code, your CPU does not have enough cooling oomph to prevent throttling.
Your CPU will not draw more power than it's designed to pull unless you're running a very specific stress test that spikes the voltages. You may just not have the cooling capability to tame your CPU, and PoE2 is highlighting it.
Most games don't come anywhere near causing CPUs to get near their max power draws. PoE 1 and 2 both come much closer than other games, though.
Regardless, thermal throttling is not a game issue unless the game is forcing voltage spikes (aka, power virus). Please take a look at your CPU's power draw and voltages to see if anything is amiss.
Might be weird but my crashes reduced about 80% after turning on dlss
Yup, unfortunately it is a huge issue. Man.. talk about devs not knowing how to optimize their games nowadays..
Some useful workarounds that I did we're to cap my framerate, undervolt and switch to vulkan.
i5 12th gen Rtx 3050 32gb ddr4 M.2 ssd Windows 11 24h2
Went back to Last epoch and other games while they fix this. I hate it, but every loading screen could be a freeze, and I'm fed up.
The only fix needed for this is to go to Control Panel -> Power Options -> Advanced Power Options and set you minimum and maximum CPU state to 99% instead of 100%. Got a 5800X3D. temps dropped from 90C to ~60C instantly with no visible loss in performance.
How do you know when you're in the POE subreddit?
When people call their PC "juiced"
AMD CPU, load goes to >100% during loading screens at times, complete system freeze.
Not sure if this is the issue you're having, but highly active chat channels are causing CPU spikes under certain conditions for a lot of people. Even if you have global/trade hidden, if you're in global 1 for example, the constant spam will cause cpu spikes while in hideout even if the messages aren't being shown.
Try joining a random channel like 9876 for both trade and global and see if this helps your issues. To my knowledge, this bug has not yet been fixed.

I have this problem. PC freezes about three to four times in a five hour session. I am kinda scared to play cause I’m afraid my PC is gonna melt.
Had major issues on 24h2 including full BSOD's, fresh install to 23h2 (using uupdump to compile) and that resolved crashes related to the cpu.
Started getting occasional soft crashes instead related to GPU a month later, ended up repasting the GPU with PTM and spare thermal putty and that fixed those crashes. All in all it seems like POE2 is the new crysis.
I have the same issue. Play a lot of CPU intensive games without any problems and temps jumping above 80, but poe 2 will instantly take me to 95 at start of maps and after maybe 30-40 seconds drops down to 78 after cpu utilization goes down. Cpu i5 12400f Gpu 3060ti Ssd and 16gb ram
Changing my global chat channel to a random one that no one will be in helped me with lag. Even if the chat was turned off, if I was in an active channel it made me lag
I have tried to reduce CPU usage by poe2, but it loads my cores assigned to 100% all the time. Only 2 cores I removed from poe2 is fine. Can game please use my 4090 gpu? Instead of killing my CPU? There is no solution to fix it.
My AMD 5800x3d capped at 70c, but my 6800XT is very hot (85-87c). I’ve to reduce the graphic for it to be cool. But of course the visual is bad.
Yes, I’m experiencing the same frustrating issue. I have an Intel 13th-gen processor and an Nvidia 4070 Ti. I’ve lowered all the settings in the game, but it still overheats. As if that wasn’t enough, one of my GPU fans broke. My PC is outputting hotter air than ever before. I’ve played games like Horizon, RDR2, and many other AAA titles before, and I’ve never had this problem with any of them.
Despite it being EA it is a very fundamental flaw
I've just decided to not play the game until it's addressed and that SUCKS. I can play Cyberpunk at max settings for 12 hours straight with no issues. I get that it's early access but this is truly unacceptable and their lack of addressing this is disheartening. Not going to beg for any pay back or retribution but I would like some sort of acknowledgement that this is a top priority.
my 13700kf is runing around 50c i dont know how you get 100c ingame, i think you shoud chech your cooler.(13700kf,420arctic freezer2, rtx 3080 around 65c) i got no temp probs at all.
Vulcan is your best friend.. had random freeze every 1 min. Changed to Vulcan and its almost gone. Now i freeze once or twice every play session but yes GGG they should address this ASAP
My rig 64 RAM Cpu, 5800x3d GPU AMD RX 6950 XT Latest windows SSD Samsung gen 4 nvme
Too many math computations because POE2 is a special needs game that has to be ultra nuanced every time you hit a mob
Big maps are unplayable on console
But POE 2 will always hit 100c and throttle my CPU within minutes of gameplay.
100% Utilization is 100% utilization. The game isn't special and can't make your CPU hotter than any other application.
I bet you never stress tested your CPU with an actual benchmark application did you? Go run Prime95 or OCCT then acknowledge your cooling is inadequate.
I'm playing on a lightly overclocked 4790k (ancient cpu at this point), and the last patch definitely helped a lot. I find cpu hits 100% during loading screens but it runs maps mostly fine.
i have a 9800x3d and its the worst optimized game ive ever seen from last years. its worse than other AAA games. every single time you open the game its doing SHADERs for hideout and other shit. every single fucking map its doing shaders. every 3min a new map its doing shaders. 60-90% cpu usage with max temps. i can see why there are so many peoples pc just crash. game is just a fulltime cpu benchmark. and im not even speaking about the horrible gpu performance.
Try running BES and putting a -5% CPU limit on it.. have never had issues since..
I also have a juiced up system. I'm finding that I crash in menus or inventory. I will try to click on a skill or something and crash. I once got caught in a crash loop trying to pick up an orb off the ground.
I installed Process Lasso Pro but have still not figured out the right settings to fix this issue.
My buddy can't load a map if his cpu multi-threading is turned on. Is that a related issue?
I was having similar issues. Capping my fps at 60 helped alot
Poe slams my 9800x3d harder then Prime95 as u say, needed to put max allowed temp in bios to 90 and cap frames at 100 to stop the freezing system
I also still have crashes after the patch. I'm using poeuncrasher and it seems to work so far. But i'm still hoping for a real fix as i do not have any problems with my PC otherwise.
Can you tell me the programs you use to monitor that kind of stuff please
!Remind me 3 days
Playing on 3060ti and Ryzen 5 3600 16gb. Yeah I know my CPU is old, but I’m playing more cpu intensive games than poe2 without any issues. Sutter between changing instances, and mob spawns especially in ritual/delirium is crazy. And its weird because system is suggesting me to play on even higher settings but somehow me or game cant handle it. On a bigger pack im getting 30fps tops.
I have 78C in CPU stress tests and 85 in poe2 on launch. :/
Hmmm getting on average about 80C/70C temps for CPU/GPU, 40/80% utilization. 4K resolution with most settings among high. Is it especially poorly optimized for certain CPUs?
Yep I'm getting an issue that might fall under that, I can't play sekehemas because the first boss spikes cpu usage and crashes the game every time I go to cross the bridge. It really sucks cause it's been happening for a week now
Have similar problems on 32gb amd7700 archlinux. Cpu started to get overloaded after some time in the game. Core11 was overloaded si i turned it off prior to game start, but that didnot help. So i got low fps after cpu overload
Still cant enjoy the Game because of it. Too many Crashs.
I wish I had numbers to have it up but windows 11 2024H2 update pretty much bricked my system whether I played PoE2. Luckily I was able to revert within the 10 day window Microsoft allows.
The entire machine would freeze, not just PoE2.
AMD 7800x3d 4080s 64GB
Performance and optimization of the game is absolute garbage. Still a lot of freezes and trying to burn your hardware often. Console gameplay lags too. In multiplayer lag is huge and screen is unpleasant. Not sure why this is not absolute priority over X monster does .. incorrectly.
this made me go back to windows 10
