I have been fighting Viper for 2 hours as a newbie

1922

AND I FINALLY WON!!! I have a bit of background in ARPG, played all Diablos except 4 just didn’t click. I loved Titan Quest and Sacred 2. I tried to get into PoE1 2 years ago but it was just a little too consuming for me coming in so late with no friends to help ease me into it. When I heard about PoE2 beta I immediately jumped in so I could have a better time getting familiar with the mechanics. I’ve done everything solo so far. And it’s taken much longer than it should have I’m sure. I level 46 sorceress sort of fumbling my way through the passive tree I’m trying my best to not look up guides until I have too, well, then I got to Viper….

It was very disheartening. I thought it was going to be an impossible fight, Act 3 has definitely been my biggest trouble act thus far but I refused to give up. I started to realize oh I really have to pay attention in this fight and I got so close so many times….so I finally googled. It made me feel better that I saw so many other people struggling but I was more determined than ever and I have finally overcome!!! Though I now feel like my build is nowhere near where I need it to be, but I don’t know what else to do about that other than keep trying to progress and hope I get the drops I need. I’ve had to use most of my orbs to mod my gear but I can’t make anything I have better than it currently is. I hope I don’t hit a wall and that that boss fight is truly a 1 off in terms of difficulty.

I just wanted to post so if others are struggling and you are playing more casually like me, YOU GOT THIS

Gz you just made it halfway through the tutorial :) GL!

Congrats! Viper is by far the toughest fight in the campaign. I have 5 characters and she is a pain almost every single time. The poisoned spear men were always the toughest part. Had to learn to change up my gear for that fight alone.

Far_Atmosphere_38531

viper and the count geonor was so difficult for me. i could beat the rest somehow but these two was main reason for my 500+ deaths.

drprox1

Viper was so hard! Well done mate 👏

Ok_Awareness38601

Viper in Cruel mode was the hardest fight in the entire game for me.  Even endgame citadels are a breeze compared.

TCGHexenwahn1

The green hue in the spears that telegraphs the attacks should really be more visible. I had so much trouble seeing which spearmen were going to attack.

Pretty similar situation here. I played through the first difficulty SSF and mostly pathing myself. Then I was getting smashed the deeper I got in cruel. Decided to try trading. It was overpowered and eventually made it to T15s always optimizing and making budget trade finds.

However, I could not survive one hit. So while I could kill the content I could not progress because of too many deaths.

Then I followed a guide and tripled my dps and survival rate. Had about 4-5 divs at that point to make it happen, despite most guides recommending 20-30 as a budget.

There was a moment where I almost quit in frustration after dying to bosses for hours on end and not having a lot of free time to waste. In the end I am glad I stuck in there because I fell in love with the game along the way.

You are going to love mapping it is so addictive.

The hidden quest in act 3 is learning how to use the trade site.

Jokes aside, I was stuck there too. Taught me how important gear is in this game, especially body armor/weapons during the campaign. You should be upgrading when you hit act 3 and then again every 10 levels or so. That and support gems can basically carry you through the whole campaign.

She was my worst fight on both characters I leveled to maps. By far the biggest DPS and defense check in the campaign.

It doesn't help that all the immunity phases make the fight tedious.

Bokehjones1

Took me six tries, but I didn't give up. It was so satisfying to finally kill it, lol

jeffchefski1

There's stats youre ignoring because they don't seem appealing but infsct help a lot.

glok1011

Way to stick with it!!!!

MarcLYNWA1

Yay, someone playing early access as it was intended!

Continue onward with a can-do spirit and a willingness to learn and by the time the game releases fully, you'll already have worked everything out. At least that's what I'm telling myself

NewTraining51

Now try hcssf :)

ubertrooper741

I despise Viper. DESPISE.

poinifie1

Definitely one of the best fights in the game.

Spiritual-Guest12101

You got this dude! This game is a lot easier than people make it out to be. Once it clicks you’ll be running all the end game with no problems and then you’ll become bored

Corneilius861

She wasn’t bad on my first playthrough. It was the Queen of Filth caused me trouble and Jamanra as well. The game is tough in the sense that I didn’t feel like my gear could keep up with the content, on the first playthrough. Crafting consisted of transmute and Aug, bad stats and throw away. Not enough mats dropped early on to help with gearing and gear drops sucked balls. After the first playthrough and having built 6 chars, 4 up to maps, I can basically steam roll the campaign with my low level gear.

Violent-fog1

I struggled with her a lot…like you I had to look up a guide as well and he showed how to avoid most of her attacks. Her soldiers shields will light up green when they are about to shoot. That part always frustrated me since I anticipated too early. Now I’m stuck on her in act 3 cruel 😂😂🤷‍♂️

camst_1

Bro viper suckssssds and sucked even more before I figured out to roll under the green spike wave

Careful_Ask_43401

Sorceress? How you struggle with sorceress? Isn’t that the most powerful/broken class?

NetherGamingAccount1

Learn to roll

DanOhMiiite1

I was able to squeak by after MANY deaths by using a poison charm and adding some resistances (chaos, lightning?)

galtiz1

Congrats OP, if your play through is anything like mine it will get significantly easier from here.

I fought Viper 6 or 7 times, absolutely brutal fight. The AoE damage in that fight is friggin stoopid.

Oddly enough it was way easier in cruel, only died once…

heinzpeter1

Nice, good job. Im not gonna play poe2 until 0.2 but if you want to try poe(1) again you can write me here, maybe i can guide you a bit :)

evenstar401

I love wholesome posts like this!

To OP: YOU GOT THIS! Keep being positive and keep winning, exile <3

Prestigious-Bird71381

Don't laugh but on my first char I struggled with the hyena dude boss start of act 2 and the witch that vrooms around on her broom but genor was okay for me. Vipers last phase where every spear lunges in feels unfun since your iframes can lag and feels unavoidable

Phronemoz1

oh god, I remember that fight, I died a lot to it and balboa was a pain too, the first run through the campaign was brutal but a lot of fun doing blind as a new poe player, now it's not as much 1 shotting everything lol

Arlyuin1

Viper was one of the hardest if not hardest boss in my first playthrough.

Peshiiiii1

The fight is hard because the space for you to move around is very little. I died to her a few times during normal mode as I try to learn her moves (im a sorc too close combat really is not the edge) in cruel mode I finished her with ease.

CMDR_Lina_Inv1

This is exactly what Jonathan observe during the closed beta, players will keep trying and trying and trying to fight a boss instead of going somewhere else to farm for gear and level. (and go complain on Reddit is a bonus, not in this case, but a lot of different cases)

bunnyman11421

Took me a while until I realized to stick to one side so that I didn't get hit by both sides, made it a lot easier.

TheWorldEnded1

Would recommend just getting resistances for whatever boss you're fighting on rings and amulet or whatever other piece of gear you want and just surviving through it. Helped me a lot when I was struggling as a noob.

robble8081

I still hate that boss in maps.

patrulek1

Is Viper really that hard for squishy classes? I had no problem with this boss as a warrior

Reasonable-Sun-65111

Ah I remember this fight well, it's the turning point where I decided to go for the demon form on my witch to have more control over my positioning. That demon dodge is beautiful.

Until yesterday, where I realised that you can't dodge through a barrage of enemies, I probably need blino for that, but didn't have time to test that theorie yesterday.

Good work OP, you didn't give up, now enjoy blasting through cruel difficulty.
