Avatar of Flame & HOTG

I’m really not sure how to scale the ignite and fire damage with Avatar. I’ve watched some build guides but I want to understand the choices rather than just copying.

  • Are attack and damage nodes still good to take or is it better to take increased fire damage or does it matter very little?
  • Which support gems are best in slot? Currently I’m using concentrated effect, primal armament, fire infusion, eternal flame and aftershock.
  • How much magnitude and chance to ignite nodes are optimal? Is there a general rule of thumb?
  • Weapon wise is it better to have high physical or high elemental or does it matter little?

Can't say for sure regarding the first few points, but from what I understood, the "deal no non-fire dmg" meant that physical dmg would be useless.

If you check your tooltip with R3(console player here) when hovering above the avatar for fire, it'll show a decrease or increase (decrease for me)

Hope this helps, I'm currently in the same boat as well, hoping others who know more can give their insight

Depends on your skill. If you are hitting with weapon then increase attack applies, and increase spell damage for spells. Increase fire damage applies to both. Fire damage is 100%, any other damage counts only 75%. Ignite damage is 20% of your hit per second scaled by magnitude, so ignite magnitude is a better mod than general hit damage if you are focusing on ignite to take down bosses, and also you can take some ignite duration for pinnacle bosses. For ignite chance it also increases with your hit damage as a percentage of enemy ailment threshold. So scaling damage naturally increases ignite chance, and better still, you can use overwhelming presence to reduce enemy ailment threshold for better ignite chance. The increase ignit chance multiplies your base ignite chance, you just get a few and see you are igniting enemy enough.

A lot of those questions are hard to answer because it depends. You're not gonna be able to give all the details necessary and nobody will do the exact math for you. However, Path of Building for poe2 exists and I believe Ailment calculations now work properly as well.

Generally speaking:

  • Phys based weapons are probably still better. Even if you just get 75% conversion, the absolute values you can roll for physical values versus flat fire damage are much higher at the moment.

  • As mentioned, attack damage increases will fully apply, just like melee damage, area damage or damage with e.g. Two-Handed Weapons. This is different from poe1.

  • You'll basically want to guarantee an ignite because HotG not igniting is gonna feel terrible. How much increased ignite or ailment chance that requires depends on how much hot damage you deal, the enemy's ailment threshold (based on HP) and whether you're reducing that threshold (e.g) through overwhelming presence.
