Is poe2 worth it as a newcomer?
A friend of mine enjoyed path of exile 1 and is now playing 2, and he really recommends that I get it but I'm not sure. I tried the first one but stopped in like the first 10 minutes because I hate the mouse movement and I like combat being skill based rather than stat based, which it didnt seem like it was as I couldnt really dodge any attacks, just stand there, attack and take the hits.
And it seems like poe2 fixes all my issues with it. Im a big souls game fan, so the roll is very nice to have, meaning it'll also make combat more fun since I can actually dodge attacks, and its implemented WASD movement. But im still on the fence since the game WILL eventually be free, but my friend really wants me to buy it now and get the bonus coins too.
Also, if I DO get the game, which class has the most fluid combat? Where I can be quick and dodge most attacks but also deal decent damage?

You will like the campaign but endgame quickly reverts back to playing like POE1
Poe2 is absolutely worth your time and money. Personally I have tried to poe1 multiple times. About 100 hours worth of attempts. And I just never really stuck with it for one reason or another. I currently have 475 hours on poe2. I am just in love with this game.
Two big things that made me sink my teeth in are the passive skill tree and the combat.
The skill tree in poe2 is so much easier to understand vs poe 1. I can actually make my own build and make it through the base game at the least. Maybe look up a couple youtube videos and learn what may be better in my build. Adjust and overcome, in my own way.
The combat in poe2 is just amazing. The graphics are great and the animations are killer. Big boss fights really do remind me of the souls series. I've beaten every souls game except demon souls. Now I know this is an Arpg, and it's definitely not dark souls. But, the feeling you get while boss fighting in poe2 is very similar in principle.
Thr skill gems system is also a HUGE improvement in my opinion.
Give it a shot, I'm having an absolute blast.
As someone who kept trying to get into Poe this is my experience,
Played about 5 seasons spread out through release to now. Got to end game each time and got overwhelmed and moved on, never fully committed.
I bought poe2 because I've always been a huge ARPG fan and this one looked like it could be the best one yet. I put 600 hours into poe2 so far and I loved it so much I went back to poe1 for the new event and actually got a character up to 95 so far over there. Yes poe1 is still overwhelming but the ease of access for poe2 got me to learn the games mechanics which made poe1 a lot easier to play. I was able to learn the skill tree much better and enjoy my experience across both games. Picking up POE2 might get you into both games
I buy the game 3 weeks ago, play it every day after work.
I try different builds, got to endgame whit the last one. Now im waiting for the 0.2 patch
I mean, you have to try and see what character feels good to you.
I started whit a witch whit lighting spell but got kinda bored, i try meele and wasn’t for me, but then….
I pick Mercenary , and trow exploding granades , it was majestic for me, just one tapping every monsterpack and rolling to evade heavy attacks, while doing tons of damage to bosses
Yeah dude, I recommend the game, and you can play cooperative whit your friend too
Combat works both by skill-based and stat-based in Poe generally. However people usually like to optimize their characters, chase the more powerful items so they can play it easier everytime.
If you only like the skill-based combats, you can actively try to do everything while still undergear, and the challenges are always there both in poe1 and poe2 (it’s a lot harder in poe1 IMO because of tons of contents and depths to go, it’s only easy early in the campaign). When you get strong enough that you feel all the contents you wanted to do are trivialized then it’s time to play another class/build or just take a rest until the next league.
Personally, both games are enjoyable. Poe2 contents are a bit lacking because of EA but it is much more accessible, it makes you feel good for starters. I still prefer poe1 endgame though.
I would wait until it hits free to play and launches fully. It's not worth playing right now, especially with the dogshit new update to towers coming out. Wait for the community to complain enough for the game to get fixed, and then you can get it.
Yes
New league starts sometime this month by most accounts. This means a big reset of everything. A perfect time to jump into the game.
do you like arpg or not? if you do, this is the best version of it imo.
Yes. that's the short answer. Though Economy is a bit schewed right now to those who have a LOT more time on their hands, the 0.2.0 release is "probably?" coming later this month, I would check it out then, I'm sure they will be adding a few more classes, but they really have yet to announce the full slate of stuff they are adding.
It's a subpar experience that "might" give you prejudices against the game for later, when it's more polished.
On the other hand, it's already fun. It has way more than enough content for a newcomer, because you will likely need at least a couple hundred hours to get all the actual content done.
Furthermore, the price of beta access is completely irrelevant when you factor in that you get 30 bucks in coins too in the package. You basically get the same amount of in game currency that you will when the game is free. You will most likely want to buy at least one premium stash for trades and a currency tab at the very minimum. Map stash is also immensely helpful.
I tried Poe1 twice and never ended up sticking to it. Poe2, however, it hooked me from the from the very start.
Got bored after 1 character
I'd argue that it may be one of the best times to get into the game.
Arpgs will always be gear based.
The campaign is slower and requires more skill compared to poe2. Gameplay and bosses is slow enough to dodge roll attacks. But end game quickly turns into a blast fest and it's litteraly all gear and build based.
I platinium Elden Ring and Nioh 2, and I only play the soul's genre and outriders on and off. POE2 is the only other game I have put hrs in. For you as a souls fan, you won't even have issues with the one shots that annoy the community. Also, better play POE 2 than Nightreign
Yes poe2 is amazing for new players
Send me a DM OP. I have an extra Beta key that I’ve had since Early Access release.
Hands down, best game ever! Coming from someone who sunk 1300hr in diablo 2 resurrected
I’m having fun with it
WASD is a game changer and you definitely can't just stand there and take hits. It's not dark souls, but there is a lot of dodge rolling and maneuvering. Especially with the boss fights.
Absolutely. While I quit playing about a month ago, I dumped 100’s of hours over a month or so. I was completely addicted and constantly looking up videos when not playing.
Why don't you just play with your friend instead of asking random people on reddit. I don't understand the point of this post.
Yeah I'm pretty casual and have thoroughly enjoyed poe2. Never played the first and my only other arpg experience is from Diablo.
Based on what you said POE2 does fix some of the issues you had with the first once. Dodging is much more important and they have WASD movement.
I'd say it's worth checking out.
PO2 is pretty sweet if you like this kind of game, plenty of help online and I'm game if you ask me!
Hey op! sent you a pm if you want a key to try it out
Lol i acvidentally posted this into the wrong one hahah. Anyway.. Never played poe but jumped into poe2 cos my mates were playing too. Been fun since and i've also played diablo in the past. I can't commit to lots of hours but i'm still enjoying it and learning as i go. Only problem is i started around Jan and i still havent cleared one character due to other commitments 😅
Dude its so fun, WASD Movement, better graphics and animations. Campaign is really fun, lots of boss variety and different elites. Classes are good so far, most fluid combat is hard to say levelling and end game builds are vastly different. Just do it you won't regret it and you'll get in game currency for stash tabs and skins.
I stopped poe1 for the same reason and had a blast playing poe2.
Got stuck on act 2 boss as witch and gave up :(
PoE 2 combat is still stat based.
First time ARPG for me. Campaign was so much fun, I recommend going in blind. The moment I hit end game I lost in that drive to play, or find the time I guess. I will run those maps eventually, but imo the campaign is a blast and I would highly recommend focusing on the fun during it and not worrying about getting end game gear or penny pinching your loot etc. just my two cents
No.
You will get your money and time worth out of this game
Combat is more stat based than skill. Especially in the endgame right now. Either your build has the damage output to kill things or you die. In campaign skill's more impactful.
The game won't be free until next year, if it ever is.
I definitely feel like this game is worth more than $30. I got like 500+ hours in I think. If you do get it play a monk.
go watch some death compilations (not hardcore) and decide if it's skill-based
remember that is early access... it means some things are missing and also other stuff might change
if you find a bug remember to report it to help the devs (and all of us)

I tried to get into PoE 1 like 2 or 3 times and struggled and it lost my interest. I started playing PoE 2 day 1 of the beta, had tons of fun with the boss fights, pushed through it with out help from higher level players and slowly got to end game and then with the current PoE 1 event season started playing PoE 1 again to get free cosmetics for PoE 2 and I find it quicker and easier than 2 even though it has more acts.
I feel PoE 2 has been friendlier to getting the hang of Path of Exile and learning some of the mechanics, even with the sometimes challenging bosses at first. I would recommend giving it a try if you struggled with PoE 1. If you get stuck or need help in PoE 2 a lot of people message in global and someone usually helps.
the monk with the quarterstaff (and then likely invoker ascendancy class) probably has the most fluid combat. melee but emphasis on dashing attacks with elemental themes.
i agree the end game is slightly underbaked, but two of my friends took 50-100 hours to clear the campaign as new players. there's a solid amount of content in the beta.
As far as avoiding spending $30 on it to play for free after the full release, don't let that be a factor in your choice. If you do actually get into the game to any reasonable degree you will want the currency to spend on stash tabs. They are a massive QoL improvement.
WASD controls make POE2 already better than POE imho. Going back to POE to earn the cosmetics last week was honestly painful.
In the end POE and POE2 are far more about builds and stats than skill based combat like Dark Souls.
The game? Yes 100%, the systems are less complex (less fun in the endgame crafting section but perfect for a beginner to start learning the core game), the graphics is much better.
The economy no, wait for next league, should be in a month after the poe1 event.
PoE2 campaign 100% worth it
PoE2 endgame - you will be asking for your money back
All joking aside, worth it but endgame is basically PoE1 but much worse
Either wait for endgame to get patched more before buying or go in with realistic explanations for EA product (unfinished)
Yep. I don't like arpgs like that usually, but got 400 hours and still feel pretty addicted. WASD controls are pretty smooth.
It will be free when it launches, so if you are really on the fence... wait until then.
Also also, if your friend paid for Early Access, there is a chance they have a key to give you, or know someone who does.
Great game and great depth(just not compared to POE 1 which is what you read here). I've spent 100's in it and still having a blast.
Just like a souls game once you get going it gets really fun.
For all of us in the beggining it was hell ,cause we played with normal items.
Now for example someone can give u some lvl 0 uniques to smesh all campaign.
then in endgame there are a lot of leech games that u can find and be like lvl 80 in a week,
Its worth it,its fun and addictive.
You need a program to filter drops and a third party to check prices (to learn the market etc)
For me go for ranger easier setups , you never get hit and u explode monsters.
Ex D4 player. I love POE2 so much more.
Heavily recommend. I wasn't remotely interested in the original game due to several design issues I have with it. POE2 attracted me because it fixes a lot of those for me.
Also even when it becomes free, you'd end up spending the $30 if you stick with the game, to get the necessity stash upgrades. You have zero QoL without them. The beta gives you bare minimum currency you need to solve the stash problem. Only buy the stash upgrades during the stash sale. Happens monthly
You will enjoy the campaign a lot (it’s around 20 hours if you’re new) if you want a souls style game
Towards the endgame combat is once again stat based except for the pinnacle bosses which will require you to dodge and engage with mechanics (there are 5 in the game right now with more being added)
The main campaign itself is very good , I suggest you play it without trading for your first run to get the best experience
Best class to start out for you would be Monk with invoked ascendency , but because of WASD movement and being able to move while shooting , ranger also feels really good unlike Poe 1
