Upgrade GPU or CPU/motherboard/RAM first?
Hey everyone, I'm looking to upgrade my gaming setup, but I can only choose one upgrade path for now: either the GPU or the CPU/motherboard/RAM combo.
I mainly play Path of Exile 1 & 2, and I want the game to run smoothly in endgame, as I experience shuttering and lag when there are a lot of mobs.
Here's my current setup:
- CPU: Ryzen 7 5700X
- GPU: RTX 2060 Super
- RAM: 32GB DDR4 3200 CL22
- Motherboard: Aorus B550I Mini-ITX
- PSU: 600W SFX
- Case: NR200 Max
I'm considering:
- GPU upgrade: RX 7600 XT, RX 7700 XT, or RX 7800 XT
- CPU/motherboard/RAM upgrade: Budget of 500€
Which upgrade would have the biggest impact on performance in Path of Exile's endgame? Thanks for any advice!

The problem is that most upgrades require you to buy other stuff. You probably would get the most out of an gpu upgrade but your PSU most likely would need an upgrade too to handle a new GPU.
Same with ram and CPU. A new CPU needs a different socket and to be able to upgrade to ddr5 you need a motherboard that can handle the frequencies.
Because of this I honestly can't tell you what to get. Most people will tell you that Poe is very CPU demanding but your CPU should not be much of a bottleneck even with a 7800XT. Ram speeds aren't even that important so I would go for an gpu upgrade.
This is when I'm on a map with 0 mobs
I play wow/poe2 mostly and upgrading from Ryzen 7 5800x to a 5700x3d gave me around 15-30fps on 4k because these types of games love the 3d cache tech that those cpus have. This is a cheapest upgrade you can do (sold my 5800x for 140e and a 5700x3d new is around 210e)
I have it paired with a RTX 4070 and have 0 issues in poe endgame.
I would upgrade the GPU first. Your MB is still very good and the CPU/RAM is mid-range even today.
For GPU wait for AMD 9060/XT in 1-2 months, or if you save some more a 9070xt for 650euro with taxes(dont pay more).
After that get a AMD 9600(non X) or a second hand 7600/7500f CPU with a 50euro air cooler like deepcool ak500.
For motherboard b850 Asrock/MSI/GIGABYTE for 200 euro.
Memory 2x16GB DDR5 6000 CL32~ for 110euro.
After year or two swap the CPU for a 9800x3D and the PSU for 850W+ ATX 3.1 seasonic/superflower.
Much better then your current PC and will last you another 4-5 years but you will still get lag spikes in juiced maps. The game is just not optimized enough.
You have a very low tide CPU, if you can get a 7 series high tide CPU you will see benefits of other computer parts more & can expand on power around the main item that drives the computers processes.
Open up the perf inspector in game and see whether CPU or GPU is giving the longest frame time. You could run a map and make a recording then review the footage after. That should tell you what is best to upgrade.
Also, if I go for a RX 7800 XT with my 600W SFX PSU, would it be manageable if I undervolt both my CPU and GPU?
And in 1080p, would my Ryzen 7 5700X be a bottleneck with a RX 7800 XT?
the strange fix for me is that i have mediocre performance and it doesnt NOT change at all with settings all maxed and all on low is basically the same for me ....
I would think that your 2060 is the bottleneck. I would start there
You would really need a benchmark for that. I think you can just buy a gpu and if it doesn't fix your issues return it and try with a cpu upgrade. Not sure if you can run 7800x3d on that motherboard.
I had to upgrade my cpu first as that is what was spiking. The game ran fine for me at first, but after a couple patches and further advancement, I started to get stutter screen. I ran the game with the diagnostics for a bit and noticed my cpu was maxing out with spikes whenever I saw the stutter. My first upgrade was a cpu and that took care of the issue.
Your biggest upgrade will be a 9800X3D, the FPS boost you get from this is actually insane. I have a 4070TI and 9800X3D and dont drop under 200 frames unless I'm running omega juiced content
However as others mentioned you'll need to upgrade the rest (other than video card).
TBH as someone who just upgraded to this CPU most likely your best bang for your buck, a 5070/5080 still wont perform in PoE without an X3D cpu.
PoE is so CPU dependant its insane.
Gpus are never enough for gaming. I wouldn't waste money with anything else because it won't matter

Figure out what is actually being bottle necked. I found out for myself that I got better performance by purchasing a monitor with a bigger resolution in order to put more workload onto the GPU. Also, for whatever reason disabling all sounds in game helps with performance. Make sure drivers are up to date. There are many free ways to optimize performance. Results may vary but worth doing before spending money with an unsure outcome come. Personally I have been looking into GeForce Now subscription which might be something you could also take a look at.
Stop. Your machine is fine. Your graphics card is the issue. *60 card is hot garbage. Nvidia is shit when it comes to naming cards. the only important number is the last two. The first two shows the generation. a 60 card is just not worth the money. A 70 card isn't much better. Get an 80 card or 90. So an RTX 2080 will be AMPLE to play the game. you can get a 3080 or 4080 but they are stupidly expensive.
You dont have ot update anything else. Just get a 2080 minimum.
