I tried Burning Inscription
I'm a huge fan of DoT builds and traps, so in PoE 1 they were naturally my fav builds to make. So I attempted to make a Burning Inscription build using an Infernalist. I chose this ascendancy for the easily scalable fire damage and also to stack mana effectively. Instead of using curses, I went with a well crafted Bone Wand. It had +4 to Fire spells, 100% fire spell dmg. +2 amulet, +3 Shield. I procc'd Burning Ground with Bone Blast because it's free to cast and also drops a Runic Inscription that ends quickly.
With around 4000 mana, here are my results:
The damage is horrible and I tested out why. Fire Damage passives on the tree and Fire Damage support gems don't scale with it whatsoever. Neither does Fire Penetration or Spell damage (understandable, it doesn't have the "Spell" tag). The only 2 things that did work were Ignite Magnitude and Duration passives/supports. Area of Effect increases also seemed to work, but I was mainly testing damage. I would have loved for this to work out, but unfortunately it looks like the scaling is either bugged, or it wasn't a priority to make this style of play function. With my calculations, even if it functioned properly, the damage still wouldn't be good enough because it's not a "hit based" ignite/burn. The 20% of max mana as damage would need to be either 35% or 40% to have a decent baseline.
That's all. If anyone has had any of their own tests with this support gem, I'd love to hear about you found. Thanks!

Seems like in old patch inscription was mainly used to proc meta gems and cast a billion spells a second. Not sure if they patched that or what. Never really saw anyone try to scale it for dps though. It is a weird gem though as it is almost like it is not "you" casting the ignite, since with original sin ring and all damage converted to chaos, it still procd ignite.
