What could cause lag spikes like this? I get a mini freeze for 0.5 seconds every 3 seconds..

No idea where this could be coming from. Any help would be much appreciated!

cpu and gpu look like they are spiking. could be getting too hot. maybe try capping your frames so they arent always working so hard
I had the same issues today for the first time. The lags are most likely an CPU issue, followed by an GPU bottleneck. Seems to be that you are in a very intense particle section at a map and watching YouTube at the same time which messes your cpu and throttles your GPU.
But I just play on my old 3700x and 2070 super. The reason I bought a used 5800x3d
If you play with a controller on PC disable vibration. Change General chat to one there is no person same a trade. Since that I don't have any issue.
That's 83% uptime, impressive!
I had similar frequent short freezes showing as shader+ping spikes solved by turning off upscaling unfortunately.
This started happening to me just now as well
I was having a similar issue yesterday and turning off Upscaling fixed it without making the game look like shit.
Also make sure you have FPS capped and shadow quality turned down to Low.
Try joining 5-digit global & trade channels to see if that helps. Moving to dead channels completely fixed my in-game CPU spikes.
For example:
/trade 13981
/global 98344
Happens for me whenever a steam download was ongoing
( can we give this an upvote or two so it stays on top please)
Measures taken so far:
- FPS capped at 30
- Turned off Upsaling
- Shadows to "low"
- Closed browser and turned off second monitor
- not using a controller
- joined global 5555 and trade 5555
- my setup: 3080 (laptop) and a i9-11900H
- disabling chat
- clearing NVIDIA shader cache
issues still persist.
Is it not just the server acting up? EU servers at the moment can range from perfect to unplayable but the most common one that I've experienced is this sneaky 0-1s kind of input lag.
One thing that helped for me is disabling the in game steam overlay. Not sure why it helped but it definitely did. That aside, I have noticed this happening more and more as they add more and more patches as well. I'm pretty sure the majority of it is "Code spaghetti".
I have roughly the same issue, but it seems like the network spiking is the one that usually initiates it. My cpu/gpu don’t spike nearly as bad as yours do.
If it matters at all, I’ve got 7700k cpu and 3060 gpu playing on low graphics with a cap of 60 fps. I regularly dip into 40-50 fps during fights with big particle effects. Ethernet cable, 200 Mb download speed, and the server I connect to (from Chicago) reads as 17ms of lag.
Sucks during big boss fights, especially during trial runs having these micro stutters
It looks like the shader from the graph. Does it happen if you open the same map a second time? Does it happen when monsters are being spawned? Did you upgrade recently the graphics driver? (this one happened to me but things got back to normal after shaders compiled - the first 5-10 maps were bad)
Odd as it is, try reducing the audio channel count from high to low. That really helped me
They got issues with their shadercaching I think, this is why i switched from 5700g(16MB L3) to 5700x3d(100mb L3). Looks good at the moment. They will also release a performance patch regarding cpu spikes end of the week so this will help aswell hopefully
My brand new legion laptop was doing this. I replaced the wifi card. Was cheap and easy to do and it fixed the problem.
Its global chat (and trade), even if you dont open them and/or have chat disabled in your UI, it still polls/updates and writes chat messages to the client log. After a while, it causes lag. You can also generate the same lag by repeatedly pressing ENTER on your keyboard to open/close the chat panel over and over, you'll see that white line peg to the top of the graph.
/trade 48328
/global 20953
/clear
And thats the fix.
I was having similar issues and read about a suggestion to change your computer’s power plan to 99% (down from 100) and it worked well for me.
Definitely chat.
Trade and global will destroy your performance. I disabled all chat outside of whispers for trading and party chat
Its all server side issues change servers until they are not there
This might be weird, but are you sure Windows is ACTIVE on your computer? Active license
It could be many things. A year ago i had a very similar problem, it was my windows killing itself from not being reinstalled every 6 months
In my case, was some issue with my ISP.
After I bought a VPN service (nordVpn) I have 0 issues.
For me sometimes helped when I alt tabed and closed discord.
Resetting the cache helps up to a point, but a more permanent solution is to increase gpu shader cache size. You can do that with an nvidia card. There are couple guides for how to do it. Also if your game is installed in another drive, game also have a problem with shaders, installing it to the main drive solves that.
As other people have mentioned - people talking in global and trade channels causes this issue and hiding the channels doesn't help. Switch to channels that no one is talking in and the cpu spikes should get fixed.
my chart looks different but I get multiple lags within 3s (not equidistant), and for me it clearly is the network, meaning GGG servers
Literally type /clear, the acummulated chat lags the game and wont go away until yo clear it or relog
Have you tried installing the software for your CPU? The chipset driver?
I did and it seems to have altered the frequency of stutters for me.
I used to have multiple ones in a map, now I only get one every 5-10 maps if any.
I've had this problem since launch, good luck. There's a forum thread with over 200 pages and not a single ggg comment. It's probably their shit coding
Huh It’s not just me. I did noticed every time someone send a message on Global I get drops
i just got a new gaming pc. the game is unplayable on the new machine. i think its wifi 7 problems talking to my wifi 5 router but im not sure. it’s been making me go nuts i just want to play the game but its not possible to do so without getting motion sickness
Are you using any overlays for example Exiled Exchange 2?
I hadn't played since before the new League was released, and came back to this being an issue (it ran flawlessly before). I swapped from DirectX 12 to Vulkan, verified integrity of the game files, and updated my drivers and that *mostly* eliminated it. It still happens, though much more rarely.
I had the same problem, switched from vulkan to dx12 and it fixed my issue
same issue
This game is highly optimized to suck ass
Does your gameplay look similar to this? (ignore the fact that it's poe1 footage) In the way that, "things" freeze, but my mouse still works, and VFX/lighting are still animated?
If yes, it is 100% without a doubt packet loss. I contacted GGG support about this, cause no other game online or offline, was having this problem, they had me download a tiny program to help trace the connection and it turned out to be the connection from my house to the isp that was faulty. Called the ISP, after 4 technicians in a week, they finally send the "level 2 technician" who after visually seeing the problem, walked out our back door, tested the wire from the box to our house, and said that was the problem. Took maybe 10 minutes to run a temporary wire until they eventually came to properly put the new line underground.
Fixxed issue, never happened again at that house.
I have this issue when I use the London gateway, switching to Amsterdam fixes it for me.
I had this problem too, and u know what coused it? My gf was watching tv, that option that lets u watch like from 1 to 7 days back. It couses lag spikes, in poe and in last epoch, if u watch normal tv or even netflix this does not occur.
I’ve had this issue quite a few times. I just reset my modem and it clears up the issue for me. It has worked about 20/20 times for me. Try that and see if it works.
Disabling in Steam settings precaching of shaders solved it for me.
Try different servers (make new instances when doing so). I play on canada east because I have no issues there relative to washington.
I had similar issue on my PC with AMD Ryzen 7800X3D CPU and Nvidia 4080 Super GPU. Constant micro-stuttering, not only in PoE, but in sometimes in other games too.
Things that helped me:
-
Go to BIOS -> Advanced -> Global C-State Control – [Enabled] (instead of [Auto]) Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgTFhf5TfeQ
-
If you have any monitoring tools, for example, MSI Afterburner, you need to disable "GPU Power Monitoring" in monitoring settings, and restart your pc. Source: https://youtu.be/bQH3DYNboM0?si=mO1VCnib8h1OBoc0&t=761
These two things COMPLETELY fixed the problem for me.
I had the exact same issue a while ago and almost went crazy trying to fix it. Does the issue persist when you swap to windowed mode? For me it only happened in full screen or windowed full screen. Turns out what caused it was a bug in "windows game bar" (whatever the fuck that is). Had to turn that off in the windows settings somewhere, just Google it. :)
For me it was staying into the same instance for too long! Try to reset the instance (quit and start doesnt help) - u need to restart instance
Your CPU is overheating
I had the same issue and fixed it by switching to ethernet (as opposed to wireless).
