Playing PoE After Starting in PoE2
Hello, I started playing PoE2 the day the EA launched and have been addicted to the game. I have more hours in PoE2 than I care to admit. This is a top 5 game for me.
My question is: Has anyone played PoE after starting their PoE journey in PoE2? This league has grown stale and I’m looking for something fill the time until the next reset. Anything I should look out for? Is it more of the same going backwards?
Appreciate any knowledge or advice. 🤝

I did exactly this before the start of the current season in POE2. I got up to level 80 in POE1 to get the armor set for POE2. It did take me a little while to get into it but once I did I enjoyed POE1. I hit 80 (last piece of armor was lvl 80) literally the day before Dawn of the Hunt launched. I enjoy 2 more than 1 but I felt like I barely scratched the surface by getting to lvl 80. It’s definitely worth giving POE1 a shot once the new season starts.
If you enjoy Poe2 I’d put alot of money on you enjoying the hell out of poe1. I was in your boat as well. Poe2 first, then poe1. Safe to say I won’t be needing any new games anytime soon lol
Poe 2 is the perfect onboard track for poe 1. Give it a go! Maybe you wont like it, or maybe it will change your life. Only one way to find out.
I really enjoy poe2 btw, but poe 1 is a goat game, and i cannot wait for friday!
I started PoE 1 in the mini league they had after I got super into PoE 2 EA launch.
GGG is an amazing studio and they say PoE 1 is the best ARPG for a reason. And yes sometimes you’ll feel like you need a PHD to know what’s going on but having the PoE 2 experience made it totally manageable.
There is way more to do in PoE 1. Mapping feels great, the bosses are surprisingly more fun than I thought they would be, way more balance and build diversity, and even the art was still really enjoyable after playing PoE 2.
YouTube some league starter builds and see what looks fun for Friday. Then watch some YouTube’s on tips for beginners. Pick an end game strategy and go to town on the new league.
It’s not hard to pick up coming from PoE 2 but there is so much to learn over time because PoE 1 has way more depth.
I had 3200 hours in poe1 before dumping 1200 hours into poe2 already.
I love them both but poe2 has a lot of cooking left to do.
Been almost 2 years since I’ve started a poe1 league, can’t wait for this one especially with all the new changes since I last played.
I haven't played POE1 yet, but am in the exact position you are. I plan on picking it up when the new season starts.
I was going to try the new PoE season too. I imagine trying to dodge roll is gonna be the bane of my existence 🤣
PoE 1 is PoE 2 on steroids. Right now it’s much better beside the graphics. I prefer the monster balance/clear speed also in the 2. Campaign wise, Poe 2 will be better in the long run but right now Poe 1 is nicer.
Poe 1 endgame, crafting and atlas is also much better. Skill tree is also cooler in my opinion!
You will have a blast. I recommend using; exile leveling for campaign!
Have fun!
if you got that deep into poe 2, the good news is you can kinda shortcut a chunck of the giant learning wall. theres still a ton more in poe1 than 2 just by it being over a decade old. but you shouldnt really have any problems getting in and figuring out some of the differences.
I enjoyed POE1 but not having WASD movement killed it for me. If they backport it soon, I'll probably play it a lot more!
Just had me thinking, does PoE 1 have WASD movement now? Or do I have to wait for a new PoE2 league to scratch my itch?
There's no wasd, and going back to no wasd is really rough.
POE is very easy though, at least the last league compared to POE 2.
You can hit max level in a fraction of the play time. It took me 3 days playtime vs around 18 for POE 2. Its also pretty easy to out gear all content in POE if you play trade league.
Crafting is way more in depth.
If you haven't played it's worth checking out. It does feel like a game that came out a decade ago tho.
I'd imagine you wouldn't like it too much if it doesn't have WASD and updated graphics. Other than that POE1 is a vastly superior game.
I would also be curious, I played poe1 for maybe 10 hours years ago and had no idea wtf I was doing, I have maybe 700hours on poe2 and love it. If I attempt to play poe1 come Friday, how difficult would it be, is it noticeably different or confusing? Seems like 10 years of features might be a bit too much for me to attempt to get into and learn.
How many hours?
I started playing poe 2 a few weeks after release and got absolutely hooked. I heard about Phrecia and dived in.
It's A LOT to take in. There's ten years of content to take in. The systems are far more developed and complex. From character building to end game systems and everything in between. It's not a very new player friendly game either. My first 100 or so hours of poe 1 were with some sort of video or written guide pulled up on the second monitor.
I probably played a few hundred hours of poe 1 total and still feel new, even after getting two characters to level 100 and farming about 2-3 mirrors worth of currency/gear/idols to my account. Especially because the endgame system of Phrecia was a spin off, so going into the new league will be a learning process still
Once you get through the learning curve poe 1 is very very rewarding, much like poe 2 is.
Some poe 1 players feel like poe 2 is a good onboarding for players into the game in general and I very much agree with that, it flattens the learning curve to poe 1 quite a bit I imagine.
If you enjoy poe 2 to a no life level there's a very high chance you'll enjoy poe 1.
Poe 2 is like smoking weed, poe 1 is like smoking a PCP blunt with a side of meth once you get things going. It's very fun. And easy to see why people hold the game in such high regard.
I tried getting into it for about 10 hours, but I just couldn't. I prefer just making new characters and builds in PoE2.
To tail off OP’s question, I know there is no cross-play so how is trade on console?
For the campaign, the only huge hurdle/difference is the gem/socket system and crafting bench. As for endgame mechanics, mapping, and bossing - Poe2 has stolen a handful of them and given them a new coat of paint and there are another dozen or so to learn. As for map juicing, scarabs are like tablets only you use up to 4 or them per map.
Wanted to as well, but I just can’t without WASD. I spent most of my gaming life playing FPS games and I have absolutely hated any game I needed to click with the mouse to move. I might try to play with controller one day, but the inventory management with it…
Appreciate everyone’s perspective and insight. Looking forward to trying PoE.
long time poe 1 player here with over 5k hours across many years. after these last months of playing poe 2 (and both loving and hating it :D ) i was actually excited to go back to poe 1 for a while especially with a new epic leauge!
but when i loaded the game up something was wrong. my character wasn't responding, and it took me a good 15 or 20 seconds to realize what it was. then it hit me like a freight train and my entire soul was crushed, for there would be no fix. i have been transformed, remade, re-educated and krangled.
POE 1 has no WASD support.........woe......pure woe....
its impossible to express just how transformational WASD support has been in such a relatively short amount of time. iv incorporated it so fundamentally and in such short time that i totally forgot it wasnt always a thing. in a few short months it has over ridden thousands of hours and years of poe 1 muscle memory ect.
i literally couldn't go back to point and click. i tried to, in order to enjoy the new league but i couldnt make it past more then one stage before i just quit because i didnt want to play it that way.
i guess i never realized just how much of a game changer WASD really was. hopefully in a year or too we will get it. and possibly sooner if GGG starts seeing a high demand for it.
If you can get over losing WASD you will enjoy poe1. It’s a far better game overall atm
Welcome to the dark side. The best cookies are here.
It's likely you won't like click to move.
I am about to play poe1 after playing both seasons of poe2. I learned Poe universe with poe2, since it is more accessible. Now that I know the core part of the game, poe1 won't be super hard to understand.
Poe1 will offer more content, more build diversity, a fully complete game basically which will be fun to play imo. I'm going with minion build, all these beginner friendly builds are great because their authors are holding your hand with almost every step. I would also recommend RF if you are into aura builds, it's author also amazing.
Find yourself a beginner friendly build with great author. You'll be able to do majority of contents it seems.
i can still remember my dopamine receptors fried on phrecia league. its more fun than poe2
I've been playing PoE1 since the breach league idk 400years ago or something... I enjoyed it a lot until poe2 came out I'm kinda tired of playing the same campaign over and over after 100 times or something idk, so playing poe2 was refreshing I also tried it with a controller and man that Gameplay felt so good, PoE1 feels clunky for me so I don't think I'll play ( I really want to because there tons of new stuff and QoL) but idk I'll see the streams and see how it goes, so if you haven't tried it yet you'll probably enjoy, you need to learn A bit about the gems colors and socketing gems(skills) in gear and stuff that's super different so keep that in mind. Mapping in PoE1 is superior, atlas tree amazing and lots of activities to do that's the fun part in PoE1 , also crafting has insane possibilities that's superior too, so go on and play it ✌️😁
PoE 2 lags like absolute hell now on my PC so I might have to give 1 a genuine try.
Good news, it's actually the other way around. PoE 2 is more of the same of PoE, but going backwards in most regards.
I played poe1 before the launch of 2 for like 5-6 leagues. Poe2 is fun and has a great base to build upon, but poe1 is definitely the better game content/mechanic wise. If you could sink your teeth into 2 then you will have MORE than enough of even more in depth mechanics/things to do in poe1. Poe1 is just a more mature/deeper version of poe2 on crack. You should definitely try
I play one console so unfortunately poe1 is unplayable later in the game
Look everyone is rightly pointing out that WASD can make it difficult to go back to PoE1 but even if you were a PoE2 mouse/keyboard player..... There is no dodge roll in PoE1.
You'll be pressing space and being depressed every few minutes at the start!
Honestly the gameplay is less fluid in many ways, go play it if you like the idea of complex builds more than moment to moment gameplay. There are some good boss fights but unlike PoE2 where they exist the entire game, they are basically only at the end in PoE1.
The only way I can go back in PoE 1 is playing it with a controller, WASD is such a goat feature.
Yeah, i played poe1 first time to get the level 80 set for poe2. I liked a lot and had fun, buuut didn't liked it more than poe2.
Combat is fun, very fast paced compared to the new game, but i didn't liked the armor/weapon link system, campaign was very "meh" to me as well, nothing memorable and i really like the slower pace combat of poe2 (they should give us more ways to have movement speed tho).
When i hit level 80 i was back to poe2, did just some early maps so i didn't even scratched the surface of what the game has to offer, and i know that. The thing is that i just couldn't devote all myself to the game because there's waaaaaaaay more to learn, lots and lots of mechanics to do, so you really have to comit to it and i was not feeling it.
Still, definitely give it a try, this here was my experience !
Poe1 is a masterpiece
POE1 feels horrible to play after POE2.
- there is no melee in POE1. You just have STR spells that act like melee. The true melee skills are absolute joke of clunky animations and clearly game not designed around those skills.
- game is definitely waaaaay to fast. Like you can't blink or you are dead fast.
- horrible screen clutter. The moment you enter red maps everything transforms into vomit upon vomit and you can hardly see anything.
- hodge podge of mechanics and content that just feels bad to play. Like i got some coins, turns out there is whole city just chilling out ? I am now a thief ? wut ? Then next map you encounter some syndicate tower and i am supposed to handle some kind of enemy map ? Then i come back to town and now some guys want me to build city for them with whole FOMO architecture.
- bosses are just mostly normal monsters + some stat
- it looks just bad. It is dated as shit.
- gear looks like shit unless MTX.
New league starts Friday I believe. Perfect time to start.
I tried playing PoE 1 after starting with and liking PoE2. Unfortunately for me I can't stand the camera in PoE1. It feels way too zoomed in compared to PoE2 and every other ARPG. It just feels like I can't see anything around me, and by the time monsters show up on screen, they are already on top of me.
Played a lot of poe1 since beginning and loved it. I tried to get back into it a couple of times since poe2 but couldn't bear it anymore. PoE2 feels so much better to play. If you have much time on your hands and like a lot more complexity than poe2 you should give it a try.
