Weighted Sum search examples
Hi all,
I've watched a video but I am struggling to apply weighted sum principles to a search I'd like to carry out. Could anyone please provide an example of a weighted sum search that would consider the following characteristics for a Bow?
Let's say I want to search for a bow that delivers "At Least":
- 200 added # to # Lightning and Physical damage between the two (must have)
- 3.5% to Critical Hit Chance (must have)
- 12% Increased Attack Speed (high priority)
- 65% Elemental Damage with Attacks (mid priority)
- +20 to Dexterity (low priority)
How would this look setup in the trade filter? The examples I've seen in video are a little confusing. I appreciate any help with this to point me in the right direction.

In my experience, weighted sum isn't particularly useful when you're searching for less than 6 acceptable mods. The main thing i use it for is when there are 8+ mods that i could potentially find useful. IE: weighted sum for rings w/ each flat damage mod, each resistance mod, etc. In this case I'd just set a minimum value for each mod on an "and" search and then restrict the cost by your budget.
Sums are kinda funky, try this search:

Play with the sum on the phys/lightning and when you make a search you can order by the highest sum by clicking the "sum: XX" on the top result
In your example weighted sum is quite difficult to use since the values of the mods are very different. You set a sum of values you want to reach. If you leave the weight empty or set it to 1 3.5 damage more means you won’t see crit items anymore so you have to set a multiplier for crit chance which makes the mod comparable to other mods and in addition set up a set of AND searches like the other person said.
Edit: in your case you’d probably only use weighted sum for the phys and lightning damage with a weight of 1 if they are of equal value for you and set up an ANd group for the rest and reduce values until you find something for an acceptable price. The multiplier can also be less than 1.
I usually only use it for resistances if I want all and set chaos to 1.5 and all resistances to 3 and leave the other three empty (1).
I searched for any bow. When you say “200” damage, that’s top end. Trade site calculates flat damage as as averages (e.g., 1-63 lightning is 32 average).
Instead of search for the minimum stats you provided, I searched for the minimum roll within that tier that can be divined to that value.
Currently, none exist. Others here have provided trade links, too, that you can play with.

I use weighted sums isolated to particular groups of stats. So I have a weighted sum for the adds flat damage types, with weights proportional to the relative max damage each type can do. Then one for resistances, with things like chaos weighted higher cause it only goes to 27, all elemental res weighted 3 times more than single elemental res, that sort of thing. I know some people have massive weighted sums for all the stats on like a wand or weapon but I prefer to compartmentalize them a bit. I use the damage sum for rings and gloves, the resistances one sometimes for armour.
For your case, I'd search directly for attack speed and crit chance, then tbh would the weapon DPS stat on the trade site be sufficient for the prefixes? You can just add to your search you want phys and lightning but not give it values.
I’d just put the minimum values you need for all the mods in the reg search (except the add dmg ones)
Then do weight search for add phys & light
Then click sum, it will show the highest phys & light while still having the min values for the other mods
Path of building has a search feature that will find you similar items. It effectively generates the link you click on and prefills in the weighted sums. It was a good way for me to learn how it works.
You want two sections in your search.
- And section with all the required stats
- Weighted sum section with all of your optional stats, assigning weights based on how much you think they help your build. You can play with the minimum weight to start your results where you're comfortable.
For flat you have to add and then divide by two the values in the flat damage, 1-199 light dmg > 100 value, where phys is for instance 65-95 > 80 value, so you would need 150 for instance, i also set it so that phys has 1.5 weight fire cold have 1.3 and light has 1, if you knew this than my apologies
