What does "tier" actually means on the dropped items?

I picked up those shoes from the floor - it clearly said "Tier 5" but the chaos resistance is T4.

I always thought that "Tier 5" means that the lowest tier can be the one that's described, but apparently it's not for some reason.

Could somebody explain how that works, please?

Jonathan (GGG) explained this in interview: www.youtube.com/watch?v=PP-P5oNCaB4&t=3230s

As far as I know, the higher the Tier, the higher the possible rolls on the modifier. Higher item level can roll higher tiers.

Noob question: How do you see the tiers? Was that a recent addition? I've only seen the preffix/suffix ranges with R3 on console.

I always assumed it just set the floor for mors at the tier of the item. Ie tier 5 boots - minimum tier is 5 or the highest tier for the mod if 5 is more than the max. This item definitely disproves that though so I guess it's just mod weighting? Like a higher tier item has higher tier mod weighting

Generally, I think Higher tier just means a higher base weight for better mods when you identify.

So for instance, if you find an Expert Item (Tier 5) laying on the floor, it’s worth picking up to check the mods.

Moethelion1

It just means it has higher chances for better mods. We don't know the formula AFAIK.

For unidentified items, tier represents the quality of the prefix and suffix on the item. The higher the tier the likelihood of the item having higher rolls increases.

There are certain levels an affix can roll, aka tiers. Higher the tier, the better the stats. Not all affixes have the same amount of tiers. So when you see an item drop and it’s say, tier 4, it means every affix is at least tier 4. I’d recommend watching the videos posted though, the visual explains it more in depth.

For me tier drops have meant nothing other than an attempt to get me to waste inventory space and time in general.

In german tier mean animal πŸ˜‚

It tells you what tier that stat roll is. The Mana is a tier 10 roll. The item level at the top tells you which tiers of stats are available to roll on that item. An item level 4 can't roll a T10 mana roll. The maximum might be T2 or T3. You can check craft of exile to see what item level you need to be able to roll the highest possible stat that you want. If you want the highest tier Mana roll, for example, you might need an item level 57 or higher. Then, you know not to waste orbs on an item level 55 trying to hit that max stat. This has been in the game since launch and helps you make decisions when crafting items. That is why certain item level gear is worth a lot in trade. The possibilities of rolls are what is valuable.

VolvicApfel1

Tier 4 item = tier 4 is the minimal roll in this item.

kyle_yes1

it doesnt mean anything unless u know its a top tier. really needs to have the tier set losted so u know its a max tier

Kaioh_shin1

I was this old when I learned it also shows tiers with alt

baccaacc1

Another fuck Up Change from Poe 1. T1 is the highest . The Change it so Higher Tier ist now better. But you dont know the highest Tier

Commercial_Sort42241

Could have googled this question that's been asked fifty times

I don't know if anyone answered but like your screenshot show, when you press alt on an item, to the right of the modifier has a T#. If your shoe dropped as "Tier 4" that means when you identify it all the mods on it is minimum Tier 4. If you chaos or exalt it can roll lower or higher however all the mods that comes with the shoe will be at least minimum the tier it says it is.
